With so much going on at my normal day job all private/self studying has stopped for the moment. I have been spending alot of my time doing the on going presentations for new business which is something that i have come to loath but also believe it is something that is setting me apart from the other members of my department as i seem to be the go-to-guy.
Hopefully this will be noticed in the long run as i have spent many late nights, public holidays and missed birthdays working on these documents. The Copywriting book that i have been reading is on going and both very interesting and full of useful quotes and ways of both dealing with clients, answering or working to a brief as a copywriter, I think that these skills are definitely useful and transferable within the design world and beyond. This week even though it is a short week has been really busy already! and its only wednesday! Still got a nice curry with a mate of mine to look forwards to and PAYDAY!!!. Talking to my boss this afternoon reminded me that i haven’t written anything in a while or put any thoughts out in to an open forum. We talked about my development within the company and how i saw myself as a person and where i could see myself being and doing other than straight up artworking. The mention of managing a team of people came up as a possibility, taking control of campaigns and managing the workflow across all publications and markets for that campaign. All i could really think about was how will this be a creative role!…I am sure that won’t be!..There might be more money in it but ideally my long term goal is to sidestep in to a more creative environment without losing that ll important wage packet! Hence why i am spending my time trying to learn new skills and educate and further my knowledge in different areas of advertising.
My main fear is that once and artworker always an artworker. so even though my efforts are small with time and effort i hope that i might get somewhere!…just who knows eventually what doing! Started some ideas for some designs earlier in the week, based on and idea i saw walking past a cake shop in covent garden on the way to work. It stems from tattoo designs and has a kind of Tank girl animation feel about it. Simple, clean but a bit messy and not all perfect at the same time. Some stable work is still to be continued but did a couple of little bits to that last week. The rest of the week holds ALOT more artworking for some new clients and setting up a workflow process for those new jobs which can always be interesting even though it might be mainly repro. More filming! tomorrow i am going back to the hotel in Knightsbridge to do a second installment of filming and stills to make a short web movie. Eventually as i have said before this will be something that i might take control of overtime, Hopefully my friend that is looking for work experience will get in on this with me and we can both benefit from it and make me look like i am contributing to the company at the same time!
Anyways train is nearly at my stop so i’ll bell ya next time.

Another day, another $ as they say,
Still after a bit o a mixed bag of a weekend its nice to be back to work and thinking about whats coming up next! Unfortunatly i spent all of my friday night at work, getting home at about 10.30pm by which time i was absolutely shattered and caught up on a smidgin of Grey’s Anatomy.
Its a bit sad i know but hey! Only just getting i to Season 5 so have catching up to do!
Friday other than having to work late on a project that was dumped on my lap at 6.40pm was my first taste of filming on location for a new, rather long term project. The project is for a new hotel being built in the heart of london, it will be a bi-monthly outing that will consist of shooting still and HDV footage for a 30 second web video to be sent to the client. I am guessing that it will eventually be made in to a rather impressive show reel video. Perhaps by then i might have learn’t my way around a Z1 and Final Cut Pro!
the camera i used with a lovely f1.4 12-105mm lens
The outing was really interesting and relished the opportunity to use a lovely Canon DSLR and a Sony Z1. Alot of the settings were set to auto just to get me used to the cameras but my main concern was figuring out the kind of shots that the guy i was assisting was after, I observed the techniques he was using and the angles and flares he made for possible transitions later on in the editing stage. We captured about 40 mins of footage and about 3Gb of still images. approx 200. Returning to capture and log all of the data. Being from a print background it was really interesting to see how those guys organise and store their footage and source material. using Final cut for the first time i was a bit nervous as i was made very aware how difficult it is to put a sequence together from a bunch of random shots and make it interesting! I’ll be looking forwards to how this project grows!..
A couple of possible freelance jobs have popped up which i have sent off quotes for and am waiting to hear back from those. The Copywriting book is ticking along and proving to be very interesting! I am not sure if i will learn as much as i originally thought as its just such a massive part of advertising, i would never have thought that i would become a copywriter just from reading one book, but it is certainly giving me a massive insight in to the methods and procedures of a copywriter and with the forethought of possibly how my designs and future jobs might benefit from having a core understanding and appreciation for what exactly it is a copywriter does and doesn’t do.
Everytime I Die is this thursday supported by ghost of a thousand and the Gallows which i cannot wait for! then its off to brighton for a weekend by the sea. Thats it for the minute, this weeks plans are to continue working on the problemchildstudio website and do some work to the stable website.
Ta for now

Feeling really rough today!, not sure if its a result of not sleeping properly as i am still reeling from my birthday celebrations or just because i have caught something! Had to cancel drinks with a friend I used to work with tonight which i am gutted about! No doubt i would have been shit company if i had gone!
Looks like i will get my first taste of filming tomorrow which i am excited about! The subject is a new hotel that is being built in knightsbridge an will be doing a monthly progress film, inwhich i will learn how to edit using final cut too….Hopefully i will be feeling a smidge better tomorrow!
Still no freelance work on the cards yet, There is not immediate rush i guess, i am more interested in developing my skill set and getting a better grasp on what it is i SHOULD be dong and HOW i should be doing it. I see to many other designers out there that call themselves designers just because they have done a few t-shirts and its a joke! when i eventually feel that i am ready to start putting myself about i want to make 100% sure i am ready and able and come across like i know what the hell i am talking about! I have already learnt my lesson by doing private work and not knowing things like how much to charge, how to demand payment or stop working and it cost me greatly!, nearly a year working on a project doing countless designs all of which were shit because i was not sold on the idea and comfortable with the relationship i had with the client. I think thats a story for another time when i feel i have actually moved on from that point and producing a better standard of work than i was then. Already from my readings and time spent doing tutorials and little bit and peices i have come on but not enough yet.
Nearly the weekend and have lots planned to keep me busy whilst other people are busy studying for their final exams this weekend. Working in central London is proving to be a great place to work location wise but i am putting on weight quicker than i can believe! so i think cycling, photography and some relaxation is in order, perhaps more reading and tutorials and possibly even go out for an evening!
Anything else pops in to my head i’ll let you know

Been a bit of an up and down day today! was late getting in to the office due to security issues at one of the stations. Still it was good for me as i got a chance to wake up, read my new book which i will talk about a bit more later and also catch up on some grey’s anatomy (which i won’t talk about later)…
I have spent the past couple of days really trying to immerse myself in as much theory, design, tutorials, learning and general talking to other designers as possible!, websites like twitter, computerarts forum and other tutorial hotspots have been a gold mine for me to get inspiration and ideas as to how i should gear myself up for my quest of being a better designer….As yet i have not exactly been the most productive person and have created next to nothing for myself and anything that i have drawn/written/worked on/photographed i am not very happy with!..
…However my journey is not to be a short one it is to go back to basics and learn everything from a different angle. All of the books i have bought and read over the past year i am hoping will help me get a broader understanding of theory within design, design practices and software packages, also at the same time i have an on-going saga with web development and learning how to build correct and compliant websites. This is one of my biggest challenges to-date as i believe it will open the most doors for me. Building and understanding this technology will evolve and span from everything to designing myspace pages for local bands, learning wordpress development as a CMS, E-commerce functionality, Re-skining it for clients to give a completely original yet very straight forward blog style site.
As mentioned yesterday the latest book i bought is about creative copywriting. This is never something that i have thought about learning but its more a bi-product of a couple of books that i have just finished reading called “how to be a designer and not lose your soul” which spoke about the importance of working with copywriters and how designers can use copy to thier advantage, I have always thought that typography based ad’s that have been well executed stand the test of time and a well developed ad can be clean, pure and straight to the point with no confusion of other visual elements detracting from it. With this said I have embarked upon a journey to understand the procedures and practices of creative copywriting and how i could use it to my advantage for future designs or as a different vehicle for a clients message.
With this said I have not completely halted any other learning, very much the opposite i have spent the most part of the day searching out new and interesting tutorials and also am about to start the basics of filming!, this is something that i am very excited about and hopefully will be another string to my bow. FINALLY after six months of doing pretty much nothing other than Repro Artworking and building presentations for pitches for new and excting potential clients I am finally going to be taught something new!
As for the software i bought i am still YET to use it!, but all is not lost come this summer i will take advantage of them all an hopefully record my girlfriends music once she finishes Uni.
What a long one this has been!
